Signs your dishwasher needs a repair
Dishwasher repair in Belmont covers a wide range of problems, but most calls fall into a few groups: the dishwasher will not turn on, it will not drain, it will not heat or dry, it leaks, or it shows an error code. A dishwasher looks simple from the outside, yet it has a control board, a door switch, a fill valve, a float switch, a circulation pump, a drain pump, a heater and a handful of sensors, all packed into a small, wet space under your counter.

Price before any work What Our Dishwasher Repair Includes
Bosch is the most common dishwasher brand we work on in Belmont kitchens, followed by KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG and Miele-style European units in remodeled homes. Bosch, Thermador and other European designs have a base pan with a float switch that shuts the machine down when it senses water, which is where the well-known E15 code comes from. American designs are more forgiving but have their own weak points at the drain pump and the door latch.
We start with the simple things that cause a surprising number of calls, such as a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose or a tripped garbage disposal knockout, and only move on to parts once those are ruled out.
- Diagnosis of power, door latch and control problems when the dishwasher will not start
- Clearing of filters, sumps, drain hoses and air gaps, and replacement of failed drain pumps
- Heater, thermostat and thermistor testing when dishes come out cold or wet
- Leak tracing at the door gasket, spray arms, pump seals, inlet valve and hose connections
- Base pan drying and float switch reset for Bosch E15 and similar leak codes
- A full test cycle with a check under the unit before we leave

When the dishwasher will not drain
A dishwasher drains through a filter at the bottom of the tub, a drain pump, a hose and then either an air gap on the counter or a high loop under the sink before it joins the sink drain or the garbage disposal. A blockage anywhere along that path leaves dirty water in the tub. The most common cause we find is a filter packed with food, followed by a clogged air gap and a kinked hose behind the unit.
If the dishwasher was just installed along with a new disposal, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet may never have been removed, and the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. If the path is clear and you can hear the pump humming without moving water, the pump impeller is jammed by glass or a fruit pit, or the pump has failed. Our post on a dishwasher that is not draining goes through the checks you can make before calling.
Bosch E15 and leak protection
Bosch dishwashers have a plastic base pan under the tub with a foam float. If water reaches the pan, the float rises, trips a switch and the dishwasher shows E15 and runs its drain pump to protect your floor. The water usually comes from a leaking pump seal, a cracked hose, a loose spray arm connection or simply too much sudsing from the wrong detergent.
Clearing E15 means two things: drying the base pan so the float drops, and finding where the water came from so it does not happen again. Tipping the dishwasher to drain the pan may clear the code for a day, but the leak is still there. We find and fix the source. Read more in our guide to the Bosch dishwasher E15 error.
Dishes that come out wet or still dirty
Wet dishes are often a heat problem. Many dishwashers use a heating element in the bottom of the tub to raise the water temperature and dry the load, and others use a heater built into the circulation pump. If the element, the heater relay on the control or the temperature sensor fails, the dishwasher still runs but the dishes come out cool and wet. European dishwashers that dry by condensation also depend on rinse aid, so an empty rinse aid dispenser is worth checking first.
Dirty dishes usually point to poor circulation. A clogged filter, blocked spray arm holes, a failing circulation pump or a fill valve that lets in too little water all leave food on the dishes. It also helps to run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting a cycle, since many dishwashers fill from the hot line.
Leaks, latches and dishwashers that will not start
A dishwasher that is completely dead may have lost power at the outlet or switch under the sink, a tripped breaker, a failed door latch switch or a blown thermal fuse on the control. A dishwasher that lights up but will not start almost always has a latch or door switch problem, or the control lock feature has been switched on by accident. We check each of these with a meter before replacing anything.
Leaks from the front usually come from a worn or misaligned door gasket, a cracked spray arm or the wrong detergent. Leaks from under the unit usually come from a hose clamp, the inlet valve, the drain pump or a pump seal. Because dishwashers sit on finished floors and against cabinets, even a small leak is worth fixing quickly to avoid swelling and mold.
Detergent, rinse aid and hot water
A surprising number of dishwasher complaints come down to how it is being used. Too much detergent leaves residue and can cause suds that trigger leak protection. Too little rinse aid leaves dishes wet and spotted, especially on European dishwashers that dry by condensation. And starting a cycle with cold water in the line means the dishwasher spends part of the wash heating water instead of cleaning.
Before a cycle, run the kitchen tap until the water is hot. Use detergent made for dishwashers, in the amount on the package, and keep the rinse aid dispenser full. If problems continue after that, the dishwasher needs a closer look.

Dishwashers in Belmont kitchens
Remodeled kitchens in Belmont and nearby Hillsborough and Atherton often have panel-ready dishwashers that blend into the cabinetry. They need the decorative panel handled carefully when the door comes off or the unit is pulled out. We take care with panels and floors on every job.
Original kitchens more often have standard freestanding dishwashers draining through a disposal. In those kitchens, the disposal and the air gap are the first places we look when a dishwasher will not drain.
Brands we see most in Belmont kitchens
Bosch is the dishwasher brand we repair most often in Belmont, followed by KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung and LG. Bosch and other European designs dry by condensation and rely on rinse aid, and they have a base pan with leak protection that triggers the E15 code. KitchenAid and Whirlpool dishwashers often share parts, which helps us keep the common ones on the truck. Samsung and LG models tend to show their faults through codes on the panel.
Knowing the brand and model before we arrive helps us bring the right drain pump, latch or heater. The model number is usually on a sticker along the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible when the door is open.
Dishwasher repair across our service area
We repair dishwashers in Belmont and across the Peninsula, from original kitchens in San Mateo to remodeled kitchens in Menlo Park and Hillsborough. The most common repairs are drain pumps, door latches, heaters, inlet valves and leaks, and most are finished on the first visit.
Dishwasher brands we repair
Bosch dishwashers are known for being quiet and for their E15 leak protection. KitchenAid and Whirlpool models share many drain pumps, latches and inlet valves. GE dishwashers are common in original kitchens. Samsung and LG dishwashers report faults through codes on the panel. We repair all of these, along with Frigidaire, Kenmore and Electrolux models.
When to Call Us
Call us when water stays in the tub, the dishwasher will not start, the dishes come out dirty or wet, or you find water on the floor. A leaking dishwasher can damage hardwood and cabinet bases quietly, so do not wait on that one.
If water is actively leaking, turn off the hot water valve under the sink and switch off the dishwasher breaker or unplug it under the sink.
Before we arrive: Leave any standing water in the tub so we can see it, and note any code or blinking light pattern. Clear the cabinet under the sink so we can reach the valve and drain connection.

Dishwasher Repair Questions
Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
The most common causes are a clogged filter, a blocked air gap, a kinked drain hose, a disposal that needs clearing or a jammed drain pump. We check them in that order.
What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Water has reached the base pan under the tub and lifted the leak protection float. The pan has to be dried and the source of the leak found and repaired.
Why are my dishes still wet at the end of the cycle?
An empty rinse aid dispenser, a failed heating element or heater, a faulty temperature sensor or a control fault can all cause wet dishes. We test the heating circuit to find out which.
Do you repair built-in and panel-ready dishwashers?
Yes. We repair built-in, panel-ready and drawer dishwashers. Some panel-ready units need the decorative panel removed, which we handle carefully.
Is it worth repairing a dishwasher?
For most dishwashers under about nine or ten years old, yes, when the repair is a pump, latch, heater, valve or sensor. If the tub is cracked or rusted through, replacement makes more sense.
Can the wrong detergent damage my dishwasher?
Hand dish soap creates suds that can leak into the base and trigger leak codes. Use dishwasher detergent only, in the recommended amount.
Why does my dishwasher smell?
Food trapped in the filter or sump, or a drain hose that lets dirty water flow back, are the usual causes. Clean the filter and check the drain loop or air gap.
Where is the model number on my dishwasher?
Usually on a sticker along the top or side edge of the door, or on the side of the tub, visible when the door is open.
Can you repair a dishwasher that trips the breaker?
Yes. A shorted heater, pump or wiring fault can trip the breaker. We test each part to find it.
Do you repair drawer dishwashers?
Yes. We repair standard, panel-ready and drawer dishwashers.
Do you repair KitchenAid dishwashers?
Yes. KitchenAid is one of the most common brands we repair.
Why does my dishwasher beep and stop?
The display usually shows a code or light pattern pointing to a fault. Write it down and call us.
Why does my dishwasher not clean the top rack?
A clogged upper spray arm, a blocked filter or low water pressure can starve the top rack. Clean the arms and filter first.
