What needs attention

Signs your refrigerator needs a repair

Refrigerator repair in Belmont is the call that cannot wait until next week. When a fridge stops cooling, the clock starts on everything inside it. Food in a closed refrigerator generally stays safe for about four hours without cooling, and a full freezer holds for longer, so getting a technician out the same day matters more here than with almost any other appliance.

Both compartments are warm and the compressor runs constantly or not at all

Frost or ice building up on the back wall of the freezer

Water pooling under the crisper drawers or on the floor in front of the fridge

What Our Refrigerator Repair Includes

We repair top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French-door refrigerators from Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Kenmore and Electrolux, along with standalone freezers in garages. Most cooling problems come down to airflow, defrost or the sealed system, and the first two are usually quick, affordable repairs.

We start by finding out which compartment is warm, what you hear and whether there is frost or water anywhere it should not be. Those three answers narrow the problem down before we even pull the back panel.

  • Diagnosis of cooling problems in the fresh food and freezer compartments
  • Testing and replacement of evaporator fans, condenser fans, start relays and compressor controls
  • Defrost system repair, including heaters, thermostats, sensors and defrost controls
  • Clearing of frozen and clogged defrost drains that cause leaks and ice on the floor of the fridge
  • Door gasket replacement and door alignment when the seal is letting in warm air
  • Temperature checks in both compartments before we leave

Fridge warm, freezer cold

This is the most common refrigerator complaint we hear in Belmont, and it usually has nothing to do with the compressor. In most modern refrigerators, all the cooling happens in the freezer. A fan blows cold air from the freezer coil into the fresh food section through a duct or damper. If that fan stops, or the coil is buried in frost so air cannot pass through, the freezer stays cold while the fridge slowly warms up.

Frost on the coil means the defrost system has failed: the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or sensor, or the defrost control. A dead fan means the evaporator fan motor has failed. Both are routine repairs. Our guide to a refrigerator not cooling while the freezer works explains what you can check before calling.

Both sections warm

When both compartments are warm, we look at the condenser side of the system. The condenser coils, usually under the fridge or on the back, shed the heat that the refrigerator pulls out of your food. If they are caked with dust and pet hair, or the condenser fan has stopped, the fridge struggles to cool and the compressor runs hot. Cleaning the coils and replacing a failed fan often brings the fridge right back.

If the compressor is clicking on and off every few minutes without running, the start relay or overload is the usual suspect, and that is a quick part to replace. If the compressor runs but nothing gets cold, we test for a sealed-system problem such as a leak or a failed compressor. Sealed-system work costs more, and on an older fridge we will tell you if replacement makes more sense.

Water and ice where they should not be

Water under the crisper drawers or ice on the floor of the freezer usually means the defrost drain is blocked. During each defrost cycle, melted frost runs down a tube to a pan under the fridge where it evaporates. When the tube freezes or clogs, the water backs up into the cabinet. We clear the drain and fix whatever caused it to freeze.

Water on the floor in front of the fridge can also come from the water supply line to the ice maker and dispenser, a cracked water filter housing or a failed inlet valve. If your fridge has an ice maker that is also acting up, see our page on ice maker repair.

Noises, door seals and temperature swings

A refrigerator makes normal sounds: a hum from the compressor, a whir from the fans, a gurgle from refrigerant and a crack or pop as plastic expands. New sounds are worth noting. A rattle or chirp that stops when you open the freezer door usually means the evaporator fan is failing or hitting ice. A buzz from the back may be the condenser fan. A loud knock when the compressor stops can mean worn compressor mounts.

A torn or flattened door gasket lets warm, damp air in, which causes frost, sweating and higher power bills. If you can slide a piece of paper out of a closed door with no resistance, the gasket or the door alignment needs attention. We replace gaskets and adjust doors so they close and seal properly.

Condenser coils: the easiest maintenance you can do

The condenser coils release the heat your refrigerator pulls out of the food. On most fridges they sit under the unit behind a kick plate at the bottom, and on some older models they are on the back. When dust and pet hair build up on them, the fridge has to run longer and hotter to keep cool, which strains the compressor and fans.

Unplug the fridge, remove the kick plate and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment once or twice a year. It takes a few minutes and is one of the best ways to extend a refrigerator's life.

Built-in refrigerators

Built-in and panel-ready refrigerators are common in remodeled Belmont kitchens and in larger homes in Hillsborough and Atherton. Their coils and fans are usually at the top or bottom front behind a grille, which makes them easier to reach without pulling the unit out. When the fridge does need to come out, we plan it carefully to protect the cabinetry and the floor.

If you are in Redwood City, Menlo Park or anywhere else we serve, the same same-day service applies.

Keeping food safe while you wait

When a refrigerator stops cooling, the most important thing you can do is keep the doors closed. A closed refrigerator generally keeps food safe for about four hours, and a full freezer can hold for around two days. Put a thermometer in the fridge if you have one. If the temperature rises above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than a couple of hours, perishable food such as milk, meat and leftovers should be thrown out.

If you need to move food, use coolers with ice and prioritize meat, dairy and medicines. Then call us. Same-day service gives you the best chance of saving what is inside.

Refrigerator styles and their weak spots

Each refrigerator style has its own common failures. Top-freezer models are simple and usually fail at the defrost system or the evaporator fan. Side-by-side models often have ice and water dispensers, so dispenser and ice maker faults are common. French-door models with bottom freezers often have ice makers in the fresh food door, which can build up ice and leak. Built-in models have condenser coils at the top or bottom front that need regular cleaning.

Refrigerator repair across our service area

We repair refrigerators and freezers in Belmont and across our service area, including garage freezers in Portola Valley, built-in units in Atherton and compact condo fridges in Redwood Shores. Fans, defrost parts, relays and gaskets are the most common repairs, and most are finished in one visit.

Refrigerator brands we repair

Samsung and LG French-door refrigerators are everywhere in remodeled kitchens, and their ice makers and fans are frequent repairs. Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators share many defrost and fan parts. GE refrigerators are common in both older and newer homes. Frigidaire, Electrolux and Kenmore models round out the list, and we repair premium built-in refrigerators from Sub-Zero, Thermador, JennAir, Monogram and Viking as well.

When to Call Us

Call us as soon as you notice the fridge or freezer is warmer than normal, there is frost on the back wall, water is collecting inside or the fridge is making a new noise. Same-day service gives you the best chance of saving the food inside.

Until we arrive, keep the doors closed as much as possible. Move the most perishable items to a cooler with ice if the fridge has been warm for several hours.

Before we arrive: Keep the doors shut, note which compartment is warm and listen for whether the fans and compressor are running. Clear a little space in front of the fridge so we can pull it out if needed.

Refrigerator Repair Questions

Why is my fridge warm but my freezer cold?

Usually because the evaporator fan has stopped or the freezer coil is frosted over from a failed defrost system. Both are common, affordable repairs.

How long will food last if my fridge stops working?

Food in a closed refrigerator generally stays safe for about four hours. A full freezer holds for roughly two days, a half-full freezer for about one, if the door stays closed.

Should I unplug my refrigerator if it is not cooling?

Not unless we ask you to. Some diagnosis depends on seeing how the fridge behaves when running. If the coil is frozen solid, we may defrost it as part of the repair.

Do you repair French-door and side-by-side refrigerators?

Yes. We repair French-door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators, plus standalone freezers.

Is it worth repairing a ten-year-old refrigerator?

If the problem is a fan, defrost part, relay, sensor or control, usually yes. If the compressor or sealed system has failed on an older fridge, replacement is often the better choice. We help you weigh it.

How often should I clean my refrigerator coils?

Once or twice a year, more often if you have pets. Unplug the fridge first.

Why is there frost on the back wall of my freezer?

Usually the defrost system has failed. Frost builds up on the coil and eventually blocks airflow to the fridge.

At what temperature should I throw food out?

If the fridge has been above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than about two hours, perishable food should be discarded.

Which refrigerator style is easiest to repair?

Top-freezer models are usually the simplest. French-door and built-in models take more time but are repaired all the time.

Do you repair garage freezers?

Yes. We repair standalone freezers and second refrigerators in garages and outbuildings.

Do you repair Samsung French-door refrigerators?

Yes. We repair Samsung French-door refrigerators, including their ice makers and fans.

Why does my fridge door not seal?

A torn or flattened gasket, or a door that has dropped out of alignment, lets warm air in. We replace gaskets and adjust doors.

Why is my refrigerator louder than usual?

A failing fan motor, ice on a fan blade or worn compressor mounts can cause new noise. We find the source.

Do you repair counter-depth refrigerators?

Yes, along with standard-depth and built-in models.

Why is my refrigerator making water puddles under the crisper?

A frozen or clogged defrost drain is the usual cause. We clear it and fix what made it freeze.

Why does my fridge freeze food in the fresh section?

A failed thermistor, a damper stuck open or a control problem can cause it. We test each.
