What needs attention

Signs your dryer needs a repair

Dryer repair in Belmont usually starts with one complaint: the clothes are not getting dry. Sometimes the drum turns but there is no heat at all. Sometimes there is some heat but a load takes two or three cycles. Sometimes the dryer squeals, thumps or stops turning entirely. Each of those points to a different set of parts, and a good diagnosis saves you from paying for the wrong one.

Loads take two or more cycles to dry

A squealing, thumping or scraping noise as it turns

The motor hums but the drum does not move

The repair

What Our Dryer Repair Includes

We repair both gas and electric dryers from Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, LG, Samsung, GE, Frigidaire and Electrolux, including stacked laundry centers and the dryer half of stacked pairs in condos and townhomes. Electric dryers heat with a coil element. Gas dryers use an igniter, a flame sensor and gas valve coils. Both rely on thermal fuses, thermostats and clear airflow, and both can be fixed quickly once we know which part has failed.

We also look at the vent. A clogged or crushed vent is behind a large share of slow-drying calls, and it is the one cause that can make a dryer dangerous. If your vent run is the problem, we tell you so, even if the dryer itself is fine.

  • Diagnosis of heating systems on electric and gas dryers, including elements, igniters, flame sensors and gas valve coils
  • Testing of thermal fuses, cycling thermostats, high-limit thermostats and moisture sensors
  • Replacement of drive belts, idler pulleys, drum rollers, glides and bearings
  • Door switch, start switch, timer and control board repair
  • An airflow check at the vent outlet, with a clear explanation if the vent is restricted
  • A test run with a temperature check before we leave
Simple process

From Your Call to a Working Appliance

Four steps, no runaround. Here is exactly what to expect.

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

No heat, slow drying, noise or no tumble. Let us know if it is gas or electric and roughly how old it is.

  2. 2

    We test, not guess

We check power or gas supply, test the heating circuit part by part and measure the airflow at the vent.

  3. 3

    You get the price

We explain what failed and why, and give you the price before we replace anything.

  4. 4

    We repair and verify

We fit the part, run the dryer with a load and confirm it heats, tumbles and shuts off as it should.

No heat in an electric dryer

Electric dryers need 240 volts. The first thing we check is whether both legs of that power are reaching the dryer, because a tripped half of a double breaker lets the drum turn while the heater stays dead. After that we test the thermal fuse, the heating element and the thermostats. A blown thermal fuse is the most common cause of a cold electric dryer, and it almost always blows because the vent is restricted. Replacing the fuse without fixing the airflow just means it blows again.

Heating elements burn out with age and can also break where a coil touches the housing. We test the element for continuity and for a short to the cabinet. If the element has failed, we replace it and check the cycling and high-limit thermostats at the same time, since a stuck thermostat can kill a new element quickly.

No heat in a gas dryer

Gas dryers light a burner using an igniter that glows orange, a flame sensor that confirms the igniter is hot and gas valve coils that open the valve. If you can see the igniter glow and then go out without the burner lighting, the gas valve coils are usually the cause. If the igniter never glows, we test the igniter, the flame sensor and the thermal fuse. These are among the most common dryer repairs we do on the Peninsula.

Any time we work on a gas dryer we check the flexible connector and the shut-off valve behind it. If you ever smell gas near the dryer, turn it off, leave the room, and call PG&E or 911 from outside before you call anyone else.

Why vent airflow matters so much

A dryer pushes hot, wet air out through the vent. When that path is clogged with lint, crushed behind the machine or too long with too many bends, the air cannot get out. The dryer then runs longer, gets hotter inside and trips its safety devices. Slow drying is the early warning. A blown thermal fuse is the next stage. Lint buildup in a hot dryer is also a well-known fire risk, so this is worth taking seriously.

Many Belmont homes have dryers in a hall closet or a garage corner with a long run to an outside wall, and condos and townhomes often vent through the roof. We measure the airflow at the outlet, check the transition hose behind the dryer and tell you plainly if the vent needs cleaning or rerouting. Our guide to a dryer that is not heating walks through the checks you can do yourself.

Noise, no tumble and other mechanical problems

A squeal that gets worse as the dryer warms up usually comes from a worn idler pulley or drum roller. A rhythmic thump often means a flat spot on a roller or a worn drum glide. A loud scraping sound can be a broken drum seal or a coin caught between the drum and the front bulkhead. If the motor hums but the drum does not turn, the belt has probably snapped, and the dryer may still heat, which is why a broken belt should be fixed promptly.

These are mechanical jobs with inexpensive parts, and they usually make sense even on an older dryer. When we have a dryer open for a belt, we check the rollers, pulley and glides at the same time and tell you if they are close to the end, so you can decide whether to do them in one visit.

Moisture sensors and cycles that end too soon

Many dryers use moisture sensor bars inside the drum to decide when the load is dry. Fabric softener and dryer sheet residue can coat those bars, so the dryer thinks the clothes are dry and ends the cycle early. Wiping the bars with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth often fixes it. If the cycle still ends too soon, the sensor or the control may need attention.

A dryer that runs much longer than it should can have the opposite problem, or more often an airflow restriction. Either way, the symptom points us toward the sensor, the thermostat or the vent, and we test each.

Stacked units and laundry closets

Stacked washer and dryer pairs are common in Belmont condos and in townhomes in Foster City and Redwood Shores. Some repairs on the dryer half can be done in place, while others mean lifting the dryer off the washer. We do that on site with care for the units and the closet around them.

Closet dryers usually vent through a long duct, so airflow is the first thing we check. If you are not sure where your vent exits the house, we will find it as part of the visit.

Dryer safety and lint

Lint is highly flammable, and dryers are a known source of house fires when lint builds up in the vent, the lint trap housing or inside the cabinet around the heater. Clean the lint screen before every load, check the duct behind the dryer a few times a year and have the full vent cleaned when drying times start to stretch out.

When we open a dryer for any repair, we clear the lint we find inside the cabinet, around the blower and near the heating element. It takes a few minutes and lowers the risk of a lint fire. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, stop using the dryer and switch off its breaker until it has been checked.

Dryer repair across our service area

We repair gas and electric dryers in Belmont and across our service area, including the stacked laundry closets common in Foster City and Redwood Shores and the garage laundry setups in Burlingame and Millbrae. Most dryer repairs, such as thermal fuses, igniters, belts and rollers, are finished in a single visit with parts we carry.

Dryer brands we repair

Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore dryers share many parts, including thermal fuses, belts, idler pulleys and drum rollers, so we usually have what they need on the truck. LG and Samsung dryers have their own designs and sensors, and many show codes for heating and venting problems. GE, Frigidaire and Electrolux dryers are common in older homes and rentals. Gas or electric, we repair all of them.

When to Call Us

Call us when the dryer has no heat, takes more than one cycle to dry a normal load, makes a new noise, stops tumbling or shuts off on its own. Slow drying is worth fixing early because it usually means the dryer is running hotter than it should.

If you see smoke, smell burning or notice scorch marks, unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker, and do not use it until it has been checked.

Before we arrive: Tell us whether the dryer is gas or electric and pull it a few inches from the wall if you can do so safely. Clean the lint screen so we can see the true airflow.

Dryer Repair Questions

Why does my dryer run but not heat?

On an electric dryer the usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, a failed element or a tripped half of the breaker. On a gas dryer it is usually the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. A restricted vent often sets off the fuse in both types.

How long should a load take to dry?

A normal mixed load should dry in about 40 to 60 minutes on a regular setting. If yours regularly takes longer, check the lint screen and the vent first, then call us.

Do you clean dryer vents?

We check vent airflow on every dryer call and clear the transition hose behind the dryer. If the full vent run needs cleaning or rerouting, we tell you exactly what we found.

Can you repair a stacked washer and dryer?

Yes. We repair stacked laundry centers and stacked pairs. Some jobs need the units separated, which we handle on site.

Is it worth fixing an old dryer?

Dryers are simple machines, and most dryer repairs involve inexpensive parts such as belts, rollers, fuses and igniters. Even a twelve-year-old dryer is often worth fixing if the drum and motor are sound.

Why does my dryer stop before the clothes are dry?

Residue on the moisture sensor bars is a common cause. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol. If that does not help, the sensor or control may need repair.

Can a dryer be fixed without separating a stacked unit?

Sometimes. It depends on the repair and the model. If the units need to be separated, we do it on site.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Many households need it about once a year, more often with long vent runs or heavy use. Longer drying times are the sign.

Is a dryer that smells hot dangerous?

It can be. Stop using it, switch off the breaker and have it checked for lint buildup or a failing part.

Do you carry dryer parts on the truck?

Yes. We carry common thermal fuses, igniters, gas valve coils, belts and rollers for major brands.

Do Whirlpool and Maytag dryers use the same parts?

Many do, which helps us carry the common parts for both on the truck.

Can a dryer be too old to repair?

Rarely. Most dryer parts stay available for many years, and the repairs are usually affordable.

Why does my dryer squeak?

A worn idler pulley, drum roller or glide is the usual cause. These are inexpensive parts.
